The Plank Challenge: Interested?

Ok, I have an idea.  For the few of you who are still reading this thing…. I am issuing a challenge.  Do you know what a Plank exercise is?  If so, great. If not, READ HERE about what it is and the ways you can do it.

One of the goals with doing the plank is building up the amount of time you can hold the position.  For regular exercise, 30 seconds is good, but the Gold standard seems to be 1 minute.  Ouch.  Remember you non-exercisers, this is not a moving exercise, so no excuses.  This exercise is for pretty much everybody, and there are a million modifications. You literally are staying in one position the entire time.  If you still need help learning correct posture so you don’t hurt yourself, please let me know.

The challenge: Starting NOW through the end of 2008, see who can hold plank position the longest.  In the interest of fairness,  THIS is the plank pose (the basic one) that you should time yourself with.  You may need to spend time working up to that pose by doing the same pose with your knees down, or your arms extended.

I haven’t decided on a reward yet, but suggestions are welcome – they need to be if not completely healthy, at least positive and cool.  Working on the honor system for time reporting.

So, if you want to join the challenge, please comment on this post with your current Plank time.  We’ll do check-ins every few weeks to see how everyone is doing.

Woohoo!

=)

I’m in… I’ll start working up to more minutes… soon!

I’m going to put my starting time as 30 seconds, cause that’s all I’ve been doing. No- I am not eligible to win whatever I’m giving away. Silly.

I’m in too. I’m not sure how long I can hold it right now–I’ll time myself today and let you know!

I would, but I just sprained a muscle in my back and have been bedridden for the last 3 days :(

Okay, I’m in I suppose just for curiosity sake…after slaving away at the gym this afternoon I was able to hold the plank for a minute before calling it quits…let’s see how many minutes I make it up to by the end of the year. I’m sure one of my friends is probably able to hold the plank all day so she’ll win for sure. Laters!

I think I can do about 3 seconds. No kidding. I have no “core.” I am core-less. The twins turned my core to mush.

Oh, and the kiddos say they want in on this one and if they win can they be on your blog? I’ll try to get a pic of all of them doing it and then you can correct their form. : )
